The Benefits of Hiring a Life Coach

"There's no shame in asking for assistance or for some help and guidance every now and again."

Are you one of many, who have been hearing about life coaches on Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok or whatever social media platform you use, and you always seem to come across an advert about their upcoming webinar or coaching package but you always either ignored it or wondered how that ad, webinar or post was relevant to you?


In this blog post, I'm going to break down coaching and the benefits - keep on reading.


What is a Life Coach? How Can They Help Me?



A life coach, is someone who listens, guides and supports their clients to achieve their goals. You are encouraged to discuss your current problem with your life coach, this may be personally or professionally related, each session gives you the chance to discuss your goals, aspirations, gain clarity, discover self-limiting beliefs and how this may be holding you back from achieving your personal or professional goals as well as develop healthy habits that align your actions with your goals.


Sessions also provide the opportunity for you and your coach to get to know each other and more importantly get to know who you are, what you really want and how they can help you achieve your goals.


Their role in this situation is to ask you:

  • What do You want to achieve?

  • What's stopping you from achieving this goal?

  • How do you want to achieve your goal?

  • Do you know how to achieve your goal?

  • Fast forward to when you've achieved your goal, what does your life look like?

Afterall this is YOUR life. - The next step is to break this down to help you decide what steps to take to achieve your goal.


I think that's a reasonable set of questions. Don't you?

Whatever you decide or discuss isn't going to come back and bite you, it's not written in stone somewhere either, its really about you and what you really want for yourself - no one else but You.


To be honest, it's absolutely fine if you don't know what you want or how you want to achieve your goal, but maybe it's something you should sit down and have a think about. At this point, you can work with your coach and figure out what's best for you and create a plan to work towards getting you to where you ideally want to be (achieving your goal). The whole point at this stage, is to discuss what you want and how you want to go about it.


The coach is there to guide you and help you figure out what's standing in your way to take the necessary steps towards achieving your goal - that's it.


The next important question is 'what tasks can you do that can get you closer to what you want to achieve?' Let's break this down a little further.


Relationship Coach Scenario


Let's say, you've hired a relationship coach, you've explained that you're having issues with your partner because you don't feel you can trust them anymore, you're paranoid and it's causing a negative effect on your sleeping patterns and overall well-being. Nevertheless, you want to work on the relationship because you have a family and so many years together so it's important for you to rebuild the trust between you.


Your coach may ask you "what is it that stands in the way for you to rebuild the trust between you and your partner?" You think about the question for a minute or so and repeat it to yourself.


You realise that the lack of communication is a major problem and will need to have an open and honest conversation with your partner about this (if you haven't already), maybe invite them to join a session too; with the aim to facilitate a partnership based on trust and honesty and work on how you can communicate with each other where both parties are heard and understood as well as to address any other problematic areas.


For the duration of the session, you discuss the issues you're experiencing, what triggered the lack of trust, why you feel the way you do, what steps you are willing to take to rebuild the trust in your relationship and whether your partner is on the same page as you. Moving forward, your coach discusses potential ways you can take better care of yourself and get a better nights sleep and you decide to invite your partner to the next session.


Everyone's situation is unique. Generally, people hire life coaches to find answers, gain clarity and perspective about their current problems. They aren't told what to do or how to live their lives - that's not the coaches role. Through a series of sessions, the client is asked a series of questions, relevant to their current issue and as a result they learn something new, gain clarity and makes a conscious decision to choose, to take the necessary steps to get closer to what they want to achieve - their goal. This also depends on their situation - other approaches, techniques or exercises may be welcomed.


It's always up to the client which direction they take in their lives before, during and after their coaching sessions. However, honesty is the best policy.


The Coaches Role


The coaches primary role is Only to ask the relevant questions for the client to find the answers for themselves and to acknowledge their self-limiting beliefs to work through them. Unless you're super self-aware and have done some self-reflection; most of humanity have a set of self-limiting beliefs that put them into a box of false expectations and ideologies concerning what they should be doing or what steps they need to take to achieve this or that, when in reality the steps they could take are straightforward. Having a life coach by your side can help you see your current situation from a new perspective.


When we step out of our self-limiting belief boxes we see things clearer. A life coach, no matter what niche they specialise in would help you along this journey to let go of your limiting beliefs for your best interests.


Addressing Self-Limiting Beliefs


Coaches simply help you to become more self-aware of these beliefs, they assist with understanding how these beliefs currently hold you back, then help you move forward towards working on letting them go. Limiting beliefs can be the driving force behind what influences you to develop negative patterns, habits, behaviour or negative self-talk. Your coach helps you to develop positive habits and take the necessary steps to help you achieve your goals. Coaches don't advise or instruct clients on what they should be doing. We simply guide our clients.


I've been a life coach for a while and I love the process of when a client comes along and openly explains what their current problem is and all I need to do, as their coach, is listen, understand what they actually want or need and ask the right questions so that client, can take the necessary steps discussed in our sessions (these steps are always realistic and tangible) to accomplish what they always wanted to do without constant overwhelm and second-guessing "Am I doing this right?" At this stage, they are clear on their next steps, they have a goal or a few goals and they know how to achieve them.
